There are not many wineries in Germany that for decades, despite all prophecies of doom, acted as visionary and consistent as the winery of Connie and Reinhard Heymann-Löwenstein in Winningen on the Moselle. With their uncompromising winemaking, which was based on spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts some 30 years ago and left their Rieslings many months on the yeast, the two coined a style that dismissed vintagers and wine officials over many years as avant-garde and pure provocation. The two swam unflinchingly and very consciously against the stream of belief in the feasibility of technology, as it still animates the bulk of the German winegrowing industry today. They practiced a quality that was based on taste rather than technical trends, simple recipes, convenient taste patterns or official doctrine. They did many things differently, were hostile, discriminated, had to eloquently justify what they were doing. For decades, they had a hard time selling their wines. Today, the two avantgarde trailblazers are celebrated as pioneers and role models of a new generation of winemakers, who see their future in the tradition of pre-technical, “traditional”, defensive winemaking with gentle, natural cultivation methods in the vineyard.
