The English term matador comes from the Spanish term "matador de toros," or "killer of bulls," so the word "matador" literally means "killer." Bullfighting is a dangerous sport, and it was not unusual for matadors to be killed by bulls instead of killing them - but of course, the danger only added to the appeal. Also, matadors were judged less for their killing ability and more for their style and flourish, because bullfighting is ultimately a form of performance art. In the heyday of bullfighting in the first half of the 20th century, matadors were treated like rock stars and considered highly desirable, an image immortalized by Rudolph Valentino in the 1924 film Blood and Sand. In this film, Valentino holds a rose in his teeth, which supposedly is the origin of the stereotype of the flamenco or tango dancer holding a rose in her mouth - a stereotype which probably played into Sakurai's ideas for these lyrics. Though bullfighting has mostly been a male-dominated sport, there have been a number of high-profile female matadors as well. 2) This line contains an untranslatable pun. "Bara" means rose in Japanese, but "baramaku" means "to scatter" (as one might scatter petals). 3) These lines contain another untranslatable pun. "Bara" means rose, but "barabara" means "in pieces" or "coming apart." Sakurai used the same pun before in the lyrics to "Doll." Here, it seems to imply both sexual ecstasy and martyrdom - many saints who were martyred were murdered in horrible ways. 4) Sakurai used the same word, "sakimidare," in the chorus of "Bishuu Love." I think his choice of using the same word in both songs was deliberate, so I used the same translation for both.
