John tells mentioned that he wrote this song in honour of the special women in his life. He went on to tell us how he wrote it by the fire with with his producer and friend, Joe Henry, at his house in Maine, USA, in 2022. After writing it they had dinner, and then recorded a demo of it. Joe suggested they record the rest of the album at the same place and when John returned a year later, they listened to the original demo of Lily and decided they would use it as is, fearing they'd lose the magic encapsulated in that first recording. As it stands, The Living Kind is a masterful album, expertly balanced between sparse and lush sounds, exploring the beauty in life's tragedies. And the version of Lily on the album, John says, is pretty much the first time he'd ever played it into a mic.
