Nepathya - Sa Karnali (स कर्णाली )

Sa(स) is a folk melody (Bhaka) originating from the mid-hills area of Karnali, mainly around Dolpa district. This song is a mixture of Deuda and the Jhyaure rhythm practised in Dolpa District of Western Nepal. Laxmikant Upadhaya, a Dolpa resident, has been a source for this song. Music when performed properly can resemble its root and that is exactly what Nepathya has been successful in doing with songs in the past. The opening track of album 'BhedaKoo Oon Jasto', 'Sa Karnali' is an example. It can take you to a journey of Dolpa and its surroundings. The visualisation of this song in this remote and picturesque location of Dolpa has certainly added dimensions to the song and to the place as well. This music video was filmed in Dolpa, mainly in and around Jufal, Dunai, and Phoksundo Lake. Thinle, the charismatic actor of The Caravan fame, faced the camera for the first time after his debut in the Oscar nominated film Caravan. Thinley and Amrit are traders travelling on business. The much older Thinley hands Amrit a 'Company Mala' a necklace of silver coins from colonial India and another lined with the tusks of a musk deer so that the young man may get himself a bride. The necklaces are still considered a symbol of wealth and are in the region. They are also linked with Nepal's long history of migrant labour and trade connections down south in India and up north in Tibet.
