TALKING STICKS, A First Nations Tradition

After a couple of failed attempts due to inclement weather and other issues, we were finally able to get together with Elder Ernie Michell to talk about Talking Sticks. We are very grateful to the Kanaka Bar Indian Band for welcoming us, to have this discussion in their beautiful gardens. It was a beautiful sunny day to spend time in these picturesque surroundings, home to the Kanaka Bar Indian Band. When equipment was all set up, and both Elders were comfortable, we began taping. At the same time, unfortunately, some heavy equipment started working a short distance from our location. Nonetheless, we continued and hoped there wouldn’t be too much sound interference. Unfortunately, there is some noise that can be heard in the background despite post-editing efforts. For that, we apologize. We are grateful to Elders Byron Spinks and Ernie Michell for sharing their knowledge and experience with us. We remain hopeful that Tuckkwiowhum Village will be able to reopen at some point this summer. Our Knowledge Keepers would be happy to tell you more about our history, traditions and culture.
