Robert Petersen was just back from WWII and trying to get used to civilian life. One thing he loved was cars, and like many young guys in Southern California that meant Hot Rods. He decided that this new sport needed its own magazines (Hot Rod and Motor Trend). So with a small amount of borrowed money, some advice and the help of a friend he set out to launch what became the cornerstone of a media empire, he'd call Petersen Publications. Robert Peterson was honored at the Special Equipment Manufacturers Association (an organization he founded) Annual get-together in Las Vegas with a painting of himself. He loved the painting because it shows him against a backdrop of the one photo of him that ever made it into the magazine. Of course, his back was to the camera because he was filming the cars racing at the Dry Lakes. Petersen was an original who demonstrated what a person with a good idea, loads of energy and some good luck can accomplish.
