This is part 2 in a series of attempts to summit Corno Grande, the highest mountain in the Italian Apennine range. I return with better equipment, better weather, but less time. It boils down to a race against the clock. For more details visit http://realworldadventures.com/ or visit http://3minuteAdventures.com for more videos. Life & Death on Corno Grande Part 2, Video Details After the last attempt to summit Corno Grande I returned to Croatia to lick my wounds and fortify my determination. In this episode I re-trace my steps across the Adriatic and hope for the clear skies promised by the weather forecasters. It was November 4, 2007, and my 2nd attempt. I arrive at the port of Ancona, Italy the next morning. This time I rented a car and took a direct route to Campo Imperatore (the plateau). The goal was a fast one day Alpine assent. Rather than hiking up to Campo, I drove the 22 km winding back road. By 1pm I was back on the trail above Campo. Soon I was on the trail I came down last time and the trail split marker. Near the mountain's base I spotted the emergency hut that I had failed to reach on my last attempt. It was well to the east of the rock face I'd been stuck on. I'd been lucky to have found that cave that offered shelter for the night. And far to the west I spotted the face I'd fallen down. And below was the rock I hid behind when I gave up and called for help. Even now with good weather the footing was precarious. Rather than try the direct route I decided to skirt to the west a bit. Crampons would have helped then and now. As the afternoon wore on I worked my way to the area where I'd spent the night in on my first attempt. The going continued to be difficult. I had a decision to make. In 10 minutes I would reach trail 4 where I went and found the cave. My choices were to tempt fate and crawl back into the cave for the night and then try the summit tomorrow or should I try for the summit immediately? I put off the decision until I reached the trail split. The summit was up there somewhere as I spotted the cave opening in the distance. I was now at the base of the summit crown. Two hours later I was in the clouds again. It had taken a long time to do this short section. I noticed the clouds and quickly lost sight of the summit. As light faded I knew I'd been beaten again. I turned back. The score was Mountain 2, Livio 0 End 2nd Attempt
