It seems that pretty much everyone has at least some claim to being the true discoverer of America. In this short extract from our documentary "Codfish Heroes: Basques, Vikings and the Fishermen who Discovered America" we look at a report from when the Spaniards were marauding the Mexican and Carolina coast in the 1520’s in search of slaves and plunder. They came across a substantial village in present day Georgia called Duhare that was markedly different to that of other Mesoamerican tribes. Several, unrelated contemporary Spanish records report that the locals were even taller than they were, had long red hair and European facial features, long, full beards and even tattoos. They domesticated geese, chickens and especially deer – from whose milk they made a type of cheese. Some reports also indicated that they had a number of horses-which was otherwise unheard of in the New World. A bizarre tale of an unusual indigenous tribe, until we consider that the Ancient name for Ireland sounded very similar; as well as long held traditional folk tales among some coastal Irish communities that Viking raids in the distant past forced many of their villages – long having a peculiar tradition of deer cheese making, to flee out to sea, with legends of their having found a new homeland to the west in which they settled.
