“Fluff” Arrives in Bulk… More fluff please! That request has been heard and is being fulfilled by our two dedicated parents, Jackie and Shadow, as they have been busy the past couple of days making several large fluff deliveries. Fluff, also known as soft nesting material, is used to line the egg cup/bowl and is where the eggs will remain safe, warm and dry, protected from the elements, for the next 37-40 days. As Jackie and Shadow come and go from the nest, their ‘switcheroos' continue to be in sync. Jackie's hormones will likely be calmer and her need to mate may subside as they now shift into incubating the eggs full time. Yesterday morning, Jackie hauled in a huge pile of fluff clutched in her talons. It included a lot of dried grass and as Shadow got up from incubating, he couldn't wait to get his beak on it. He helped her separate it somewhat before he left, leaving Jackie to arrange it. Jackie moved the big bundle of dried grass over to the bowl in increments, then laid down and got comfy before getting to work. The wind was strong but she worked quickly by pulling the dried fluff to herself and tucking it in so none blew away. Shadow arrived with a fresh fish delivery about a half hour later. She was happy to claim it and Shadow stayed with her until she was finished eating. Then he took off for a couple of wind-aided solo flights around the nest tree before retrieving another bundle of fluff. Shadow waited patiently for a turn on the eggs but Jackie seemed content staying put and spreading the fluff. About an hour later, Jackie finally took a break after Shadow brought a stick and nudged her a bit with his body (on purpose!) while placing it. When she returned from her breaks, he would plead his case to stay, but her beaky kisses eventually worked and he'd finally get up. Jackie had enough fluff delivered to keep her busy all day and more was delivered already today, so the nest looks amazing! Jackie and Shadow will share incubation for about the next 37-40 days or until the eggs hatch. We wish them all the best as they care for their precious eggs!
