This is a driver view of the road, traffic and scenery along I-64 westbound complete from MO 141 in Town & Country, MO to Wentzville, MO on 6/8/25. This is complete video without any omissions. I am able to show the entire route thanks to a dashcam. Otherwise, it would be difficult or impossible to hold a video camera steady for the length of time required. The entire route of I-64 through the St. Louis metro area is concurrent with US Route 40 a/k/a US 40. Indeed, probably because US 40 was already a principal road through St. Louis pre-existing any of the interstate system (which only began in the 1950's), locals still often refer to it as Highway 40. It turns out, coincidently, that I-64 ends at the very point this video ends, i.e. at the interchange with I-70, US 40 and US 61. I-64 begins traveling eastward from that point and that is where it ends if one is going westbound which is what this video shows, and if I had continued on the same roadway without left exiting to I-70 where the video ends, we would have been on US 61 north instead of I-64 west. Prior to becoming I-64, this highway was signed only as US 40 and although it was a 4-lane, dual carriage highway, there were numerous at-grade intersections with few overpasses. Finally, in 2009 the last at-grade intersection and stoplight was removed, and on December 7, 2009, and after making a few more signage changes, I-64 was complete in Missouri. Even though the conversion to interstate status would eventually take until late 2009, I-64 signs began appearing on completed sections as early as 1987. I can only guess the original plan was to finish way before 2009. Somewhat interestingly (at least to me), because US 40 had always been the main road through and between Kansas City and St. Louis, before any interstate construction had even begun, there were signs from each state line which said "Future I-55/I-64 Corridor" and "Future I-70 Corridor." Having traveled this stretch of roadway many times while it was still only US 40, I must say the upgrade to interstate condition has made a huge difference in travel time between St. Louis and Wentzville. In particular, just east of where I-64 now ends, there was at grade crossing with stop light and a service station on one of the corners, and especially towards rush hour, the traffic would inevitably be backed a lot at this intersection. It is wonderful not to have that bottleneck anymore. For anyone interested, I-64 ends at the other end in the same fashion, an interchange with other highways--on the eastern end, I-64 ends at its junction with I-264 and I-664 in Chesapeake, Virginia.
