Avondale West Avondale was established in 1890 as farm a gentleman called Edward O’Connell Farrell who was a member of the pioneer column. This is because the area had plenty of grazing land for horses. The area soon became a vibrant dairy farm. At one point it supplied Salisbury (now Harare), with 100 bottles of milk per day and 100pounds of butter per week. Avondale was named after Avondale Estate, in County Wicklow Ireland. In this video I will as also feature Wicklow road, which is named after the Irish county. Avondale was officially declared a village in 1911. Avondale was farm was later divided and new suburbs of Emerald Hill and Kensington were established within the original farm, boundary. Avondale was officially incorporated on to the city Salisbury in 1934. The residents voted in favour of incorporation in to the city so that they could be included in the electricity infrastructure of Harare which at the time was called Salisbury. In this video I did not cover the whole of Avondale, I will so in other videos. But for now sit back, relax and enjoy the tour of Avondale West.
