My reunion with the San Francisco Tape Center Buchla: This video documents a live session with one of the rare, original instruments built by Don Buchla—the San Francisco Tape Center Buchla—recorded on location at the Library of Congress. I first encountered this instrument in the mid 1970s while studying with Michael Czajkowski at the Aspen Music Festival, where I spent four summers patching, listening, and learning. Michael inherited this amazing Buchla from Morton Subotnick after Mort left New York and headed to Cal Arts. All sound sources in this performance originate exclusively from the Buchla. The audio is processed live through my surround performance setup in Logic Pro, used here as a spatial and mixing environment only—no additional sound generation, overdubs, or post-production editing. An Atmos release is in the works. This is a real-time patching/listening session. A jam. A dialogue with the instrument. Letting the Buchla suggest direction rather than imposing one. Expect evolving timbres, shifting control voltages, moments of density and restraint, and the occasional surprise that only happens when you stay out of the way. BTW, it' is call Jam 2 because Jam 1's audio wasn't recorded! Recorded live at the Library of Congress. Thanks to Carol Ward Bamford and Andrew Northrop for making this possible!
