This area, just upstream from Lisbon, is thus aptly named the Ribatejo, meaning "upon the Tagus". Santarém is a site of ancient religious significance, named after the local martyr Saint Irene ("Santa Iria"), and has always featured a strategic fortification of some kind. From the "Portas do Sol" viewpoint, where we start our walk, you can admire the Tagus river valley, extending to the south for as far as the eye can see. Although Google promised some sunshine, Saint Peter agreed otherwise, and the day was actually quite cloudy.
