My cat can't pee? The blocked Cat. What to do and how your vet will fix your cat.

Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about the blocked cat. A blocked cat is a cat that is not able to urinate. This is a life threatening condition. If your cat can not pee or urinate, take your cat to see a veterinarian ASAP. A blocked cat refers to a cat with a urinary obstruction, typically caused by a blockage in the urethra. This condition is most common in male cats due to their narrower urethra and is considered a medical emergency because it can quickly lead to kidney failure, bladder rupture, and even death if left untreated. Causes of Urinary Blockage in Cats Urinary crystals or stones (often made of struvite or calcium oxalate) Mucus plugs (a mix of proteins, debris, and crystals) Bladder inflammation (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis - FIC) Swelling or spasms of the urethra Tumors or strictures (narrowing of the urethra) Symptoms of a Blocked Cat Straining to urinate with little or no urine produced Frequent trips to the litter box Vocalizing (crying out) in pain Licking the genital area excessively Vomiting or lethargy Hard, swollen belly (indicating a full bladder) Collapse or unresponsiveness in severe cases How a Vet Treats a Blocked Cat Emergency Stabilization If the cat is in shock or severely ill, the vet may administer IV fluids, pain relief, and emergency stabilization before proceeding. Relieving the Blockage The cat is usually sedated or anesthetized. A urinary catheter is inserted into the urethra to flush out the blockage and drain the bladder. The bladder is often flushed multiple times to remove debris or remaining crystals. Hospitalization & Monitoring The catheter is usually left in place for 24-72 hours to keep the urethra open and allow inflammation to subside. The cat is given IV fluids to flush the kidneys and bladder. Pain medications and possibly muscle relaxants are provided. Post-Catheter Care Once the catheter is removed, the cat is monitored for normal urination. The vet may prescribe medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxers, and antibiotics (if an infection is present). Long-Term Management & Prevention Diet Change: Prescription urinary food to reduce crystal formation. Increased Water Intake: More wet food and water sources to keep urine diluted. Stress Reduction: Since stress can contribute to urinary issues, using calming techniques, pheromone diffusers, or environmental enrichment can help. Regular Vet Checkups: To monitor for recurrence. Severe Cases: Surgery Options If blockages keep happening, the vet may recommend: Perineal Urethrostomy (PU Surgery): This procedure widens the urethral opening to reduce the risk of future blockages. Bladder stone removal surgery (if stones are too large to pass). When to See a Vet? A blocked cat needs immediate veterinary care. If your cat is showing symptoms, do not wait, as this condition can become fatal within 24-48 hours.
