Located in the county of East Sussex, and around 25 miles north of Eastbourne, is the town of Crowborough. Geographically, Crowborough is situated within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the eastern edge of the Ashdown Forest. Its highest point is around 242 metres (just under 800 ft) above sea level. Due to the presence of iron ore in the High Weald, Crowborough once had a thriving iron-making industry. This is speculated to have gone back as far as the Roman era due to its location along the London to Lewes road. During the late 15th century, England's first blast furnace was introduced to the nearby hamlet of Newbridge. This brought the iron industry to new heights in Crowborough and nearby settlements, before going into decline at the onset of the Industrial Revolution when the settlements within the High Weald were left unable to compete with the coke-fired ironworks of the time. In 1868 the railway arrived in Crowborough courtesy of the Brighton, Uckfield and Tunbridge Wells Railway. Today, the station is situated on the Uckfield branch of the Oxted Line, with trains to and from London taking around 70 minutes. It is worth noting that the town centre is about a mile-and-a-half away from the station, and in an uphill direction! From the late 19th century, Crowborough was promoted as a spa town owing to its high elevation, natural springs and surrounding forest. It began to attract notable residents, including Arthur Conan Doyle, who lived here from 1907 to 1930. Eventually, Crowborough's spa town aspect was dropped, and instead it transitioned into a commuter town. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
