The History of St. Patrick St Patrick was born around 386 AD. When he was 16 years old, he was kidnapped from his home by a group of Irish pirates and taken to Ireland where they sold as a slave. He finally escaped after 6 difficult years of slavery when he was 22 years old. He went to France and began to study the Bible. He later became a priest and traveled all over Ireland creating schools and churches for them. Many people believe that he was erform miracles! The most famous story of Saint Patrick is that he somehow gathered all the snakes and then he threw them into the sea! He died on March 17th in the year 461. March 17 has been celebrated every year, as an important day for the Irish! The Holiday St Patrick's Day is one of the most popular holidays in North America. It combines a celebration of Irish culture with a great excuse to get out and "have a blast"! It has been celebrated since the 18th century, making it one of the oldest holidays in North America. The Irish have made huge contributions in North America and Saint Patrick's Day is about celebrating Saint Patrick, as well as the Irish people. Although Saint Patrick's Day has a connection to the Catholic Church, it is also a day where EVERYONE in North America celebrates by wearing something green to show support for the Irish community. Many stores are filled with green decorations. Cakes and candies are decorated in green too. Some places sell green beer! This is also known as one of the biggest nights of the year to go out and party! The biggest Saint Patrick's Day celebrations are usually held in New York City. If you want to see a big Saint Patrick's Day parade, New York City is the place to be! This parade has been held every year since 1762, in some cities you can see rivers and fountains dyed green to celebrate this holiday. On March 17th, Everybody Loves the Irish! Symbols of Saint Patrick's Day The shamrock is a symbol of Ireland and St Patrick's Day. Shamrocks are green and most shamrocks have three leaves. Many people believe if you find a shamrock with four leaves you will have lots of good luck. This is called a four-leaf clover. Other symbols of Saint Patrick's Day are horseshoes and leprechauns! Idiom #1 To be GREEN with envy. Very jealous. It's like saying someone is sick with jealousy. Example: When Steve got promoted to manager of the company, his colleagues were green with envy! Idiom #2 To get the green light When you give someone the green light to do something, you are giving them permission to do something or for something to happen. Example: The teacher gave his students the green light to organize a party. Idiom #3 To be green is used to describe someone immature in age or very inexperienced. Example: Simon just started working for our company. He's working a slowly and he's made some mistakes, but he is still a little green. Idiom #4 To have a green thumb Having a green thumb means you are very good with plants and a skilled at gardener. Examples: Samantha has a green thumb, so her garden always looks beautiful! John doesn't have a green thumb. That's why he buys plastic plants! Idiom #5 The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence (the grass is greener) When you believe that others are in a better situation than you, but, their situation may not be as good as it seems. Example: 1) Bob wants to quit his job and go work for another company. People always think the grass is greener somewhere else. Idiom #6 The luck of the Irish is used to describe people who have a lot of luck, just like the Irish with their shamrocks, horseshoes and leprechauns with their pots of gold! Example: I can't believe that I won the lottery twice in one month! I must have the luck of the Irish! Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
