Home to more than 260,000 residents, the city becomes a major cultural destination every weekend, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors drawn by its famous Arts and Crafts Fair. Embu’s story begins long before tourism. Originally an Indigenous territory known as M’Boy, meaning “river of snakes,” the area became a Jesuit settlement in the 16th and 17th centuries. The construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in 1628 formed the historic core that still defines the city today. Because Embu remained outside major economic cycles like coffee and industrialization, its historic center was preserved almost intact, later protected as heritage in 1938. In the mid-20th century, facing economic stagnation, Embu found a new path through art. From the 1960s onward, artists and artisans began occupying the historic center, transforming streets and houses into studios, galleries, and creative spaces. This movement led to the creation of the Embu Arts and Crafts Fair, which now brings together around 500 exhibitors and up to 40,000 visitors every weekend. Today, the fair spreads through streets, squares, and alleys, offering handmade furniture, décor, fashion, jewelry, and original design, alongside a strong culinary scene. Historic buildings host restaurants, cafés, and ateliers, while spaces like the Washerwomen’s Alley show how everyday paths from the past became cultural landmarks. Alongside the fair, the Green Market, cultural festivals, and seasonal events reinforce Embu’s identity. Officially renamed Embu das Artes in 2011, the city fully embraced art as its core identity. More than a market or tourist stop, Embu das Artes is a living cultural ecosystem where history, creativity, and everyday life continue to flow together. #asmr #walkingtour #citywalk
