Courtesy of @instituteforwildlifestudies and @ExploreBirds http://www.iws.org/livecams.html FP1 hatched just a few hours ago. The first few feedings are usually hit and miss (mostly miss). Newly hatched chicks do not have a lot of muscles developed yet and have a hard time keeping their head straight. Also, the fact that FP1 was facing the wrong way did not help either. 🙃 It will get better soon! FP hatched 4/2 by 08:24. Egg1 laid 2/23 around 16:00. Egg2 laid 2/26 16:56. Egg3 laid 2/29 around 19:51. One egg broke overnight, unclear which. This is a new nest camera installed by Dr. Sharpe in the fall of 2023. The nesting site is also new and was only previously used in 2023 (successfully so). The nest is located in a quiet canyon, on Santa Cruz Island in California, about 10-15 feet off the ground.
