(11 Jun 1999) Serbo-Croat/Nat There are mixed feelings on the streets of Pristina, as the arrival of a U-N peacekeeping force into Kosovo draws closer. NATO says troops will enter Kosovo within 24 hours. The Serbian population of the Kosovar provincial capital Pristina, who remained throughout the NATO bombardment, are worried about their future. The ethnic Albanian population of Pristina has already fled to the refugee camps of Albania and Macedonia. Now it's the turn of the city's Serb inhabitants to fear for their future. On Friday people were coming to terms with the news that Serb troops were withdrawing from the province. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "I don't think anything about the plan. This is a lost cause, we could have done this straight away and now nothing of this would have happened." SUPER CAPTION: vox pop Pristina Serbs live in dread of the wrath of returning ethnic Albanian refugees. But some see the need for reconciliation and believe that Serbs and ethnic Albanians will be able to live together once more. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "The majority of Serbs are not afraid, and I think this is the right thing to do for all of us living in Kosovo, to start living in unity even with them, since we have been living with them for a long time everybody realises now that the whole problem was brought up by the West but life now will be better than it was and I sincerely hope so, and the Yugoslav army has big credit because they defended us." SUPER CAPTION: vox pop But many Serbs in Kosovo feel they have been betrayed by their leaders in Belgrade. SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat) "We have given up on Kosovo, we have lost everything and this is a capitulation." SUPER CAPTION: vox pop Pristina has just hours to prepare itself for the arrival of NATO troops.
