Source: @Emma Britt A rectocele (bulging of the rectum into the vaginal wall) and a cystocele (bulging of the bladder into the vaginal wall) are conditions that typically present in older women, often due to age-related weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues. These issues are commonly linked to childbirth, menopause, and the natural loss of tissue elasticity with aging. Why It Can Happen Earlier In women with connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), the risk of developing a rectocele or cystocele can be significantly higher and symptoms may appear at a younger age. EDS affects the body's production of collagen, making ligaments and connective tissue weaker and more stretchable than normal. This structural fragility means that even without the usual triggers like aging or multiple childbirths, women with EDS may experience pelvic organ prolapse much earlier. Symptoms Vaginal bulging or pressure Difficulty with bowel or bladder emptying Lower back pain A sensation of pelvic heaviness Bottom Line While rectoceles and cystoceles are typically conditions seen in older women, those with connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome may develop them much earlier due to the underlying weakness in their pelvic support structures. Recognizing this earlier onset is crucial for proper diagnosis and management. #constipation #guthealth #stories
