Hey guys! We’re now live on Spotify 🎧 Listen here: https://open.spotify.com/show/3K57vHe... The 1960s hippie movement is often remembered as a time of peace, freedom, and self-expression. But for many women inside the counterculture, the reality was far more complicated and often far less liberating than it appeared. While the movement promoted ideals of equality and rejecting traditional gender roles, many hippie communities still reflected deeply rooted inequalities. Women were often expected to take on domestic responsibilities within communes, care for children, and support male leaders or partners, even as they rejected mainstream society. The idea of “free love” sometimes created environments where women faced pressure, exploitation, or limited autonomy over their own relationships. At the same time, access to reliable healthcare, financial stability, and personal safety could be uncertain. Some women found genuine empowerment and community, while others experienced instability, lack of structure, and emotional or physical vulnerability.
