This video covers week two of our 2024 USA road trip. It was a busy week, covering over a thousand miles and several places worth a visit – hence the slightly longer video. We travelled from Roswell to Albuquerque, where we spent a couple of nights. Whilst there, we visited “Twisters” fast food restaurant, which provided the setting for “Los Pollos Hermanos” in the “Breaking Bad” TV series. The ABQ Biopark was worth a quick visit, before we had a stroll around the Albuquerque Old Town. Leaving Albuquerque, we visited the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, which gave far-reaching views across Albuquerque. Never missing an opportunity to use our “America the Beautiful” National Park Service annual pass, we dropped into the Petroglyph National Monument for a quick look around. The NPS annual pass is essential if you’re planning a USA road trip as it gives access to all NPS funded parks for a flat fee of $80 for a year. This also includes the big parks such as Yosemite, Yellowstone and Grand Canyon - and is a real bargain, rather than paying for each individual venue. The $80 annual fee covers all occupants in your car. From Albuquerque, we hit the road heading for Aztec to visit the Puebloan village ruins there. We passed through Cuba on the way! We had two nights staying in Cortez, which gave us easy access to Mesa Verde National Park. For me, this was a highlight of our 2024 road trip, especially the hike down to the Cliff Palace. Truly spectacular – and well worth a visit. From Cortez we headed for Great Sand Dunes National Park, passing through Durango, Pagosa Springs and the Wolf Creek Pass – a great drive. Great Sand Dunes National Park was notable for the mosquitos that attacked me by the water there! It’s one crossed off the list but I don’t think we’d bother visiting there again. We then headed for Walsenburg for an overnight stay. From Walsenburg, we set off for Colorado Springs, visiting the Garden of the Gods and Seven Falls – both of which are worth a visit. The red rock at the Garden of the Gods is spectacular and sets you up nicely to be awe-struck by Bryce Canyon National Park – which I’ll cover in week four of this video series. After a night in Colorado Springs, we headed for Denver via Pikes Peak. We were lucky having a beautiful day, which allowed amazing views along the 18 mile scenic drive to Pikes Peak summit. As a keen driver, I relished every moment of the twisty hairpin bends. Whilst the Chevy Malibu was fine, I would have really enjoyed driving a more interesting car to the summit, preferably a convertible! Pikes Peak was a lot of fun – but you will need to pre-purchase a timed entry ticket before your visit. From Pikes Peak, we drove to Denver where we spent two nights before heading to Estes Park for the Rocky Mountain National Park. This is covered in week three of this video series.
