MAPH Works In Progress Conference presents: Beyond Sentiocentric Antinatalism: Needience and The End of All Life by Amanda Sukenick. presented at The University of Chicago, on February 27th 2026, at 11:30am Abstract: Antinatalism has traditionally been framed within anthropocentric and sentiocentric scopes, grounding its moral prohibitions in suffering, harm, or duties to future beings. Taking seriously David Benatar’s claim of theory-neutrality, this paper identifies two major omissions in the literature: the absence of a systematic biocentric antinatalism extending negative value to insentient life, and the lack of sustained Aristotelian or neo-Aristotelian engagement with antinatalist theory. I propose a shift in axiological focus from suffering to needience: the morally relevant condition of existing in states of biological deprivation. Recognizing frustrated needience as a form of disvalue enables a rigorously articulated anti-life antinatalism and extinctionism grounded in a reimagined Aristotelian framework.
