Dalit Murasu, a widely-read Tamil monthly crusading for the oppressed, completed its tenth year in January. The magazine's editor, M. Punitha Pandian, has reason to be proud of the milestone — it has not been easy running a magazine with almost no financial support. Bringing out each issue was a challenge,.... On Feb 8th 2012 I took an interview of Mr. Punithapandian, Editor of Dalit Murasu. It is a Tamil magazine which is running for the past 15years in Tamil Nadu. It uphold and preaches Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's ideology. Till now the Magazine has created more than 100 dalit writers, who are working at present in various mainstream Tamil daliy and magizine. 7000, magazine's are published and circulated. As the name is Dalit, it discusses even other issues, which is concerned to the Indian society. However, the society considers Dalit as a 'stigma' therefore they do not come forward to sell this in mainstream shops. Many appeal to make the Government of Tamil Nadu to subscribe the magazine in general library went unheard. Though there are many Dalit political parties, and also the progressive parties such as CPM etc, has never supported or demanded the government of Tamil Nadu to subscribe the magazine in Government library. There are almost five researchers are done on the Magazine. The Dalit political parties keep away from the magazine because they think that the magazine dosenot exclusively focuses or praise Dalit parties. The editor also says at few times the Dalits who are working in government sector told not to send the magazine to the office or house because it is a 'dalit' magaizne. One of the biggest success of the Magazine, the government was forced to fill the backlog post of Sc/ST. He also says that though there are 18% dalits are in Government jobs, not even 1% come forward to support or help the magazine. At present the Magazine is running under a deficiency of Rs. 5,00,000. Only if he is to able to pay Rs. 1,00,000/ the next issue can be published or else the future of the magazine is blank. The impact of the Dalit Murasu could be seen the way the mainstream media waits for the Dalit murasu's stand on any particular issue. Few things we can do: To mobilize people to subscribe the magazine To make the government of Tamil Nadu to subscribe the magazine in General public library To mobilize money to support him.
