Our next destination in our Colombia travel adventure is the magnificent Cocora Valley, more commonly known as the Valle de Cocora Colombia. It's located in the department of Armenia. Here, Colombia’s national tree, the Wax Palm Quindio, grows up to 60 meters in height, making it the highest palm in the world. The Valle is a very popular destination for Colombia tourism not only for its scenic beauty but the various activities that it offers, including bird watching, horse-back riding, and lovely hiking trails. The reserve owes its name to a Quimbaya's princess, which means "water star", however, it's also said that Cocora was what the indigenous people used to call the wax palm. Here, you have the option of hiking Quindio or trekking along the hiking coffee triangle. We talked with a local guide to learn more about this emblematic place and then visited the nearby town of Salento. When visiting Salento Colombia, we found the village to be extremely friendly, but it was its architecture that stole the show with Colombian old houses built out of bahareque and mud.
