Buying your first plane is an important part of your journey into the craft of Woodworking. What you should buy first is highly subjective, but here I offer my opinion on what represents an incredibly good value option. The No.4 pattern smoothing planes are plentiful due to being made in such vast volumes. The reason for their popularity is clear. Easy to mass produce and easy for any woodworker to get stunning results. Check the video to see what a great job these planes do. At the time of filming this video you can pick up a decent No.4 plane for between £15 and £40. Ever since eBay began, and let's not forget car boot sales too, the price and availability never changes. Unlike things like router planes and shoulder planes that were never required by all woodworkers, this means their relative scarcity elevates the price. However the No.4 would allow a cabinet maker to add finishing touches to fine furniture or a maintenance man to ease a door and everything in-between. Will a simple No.4 made by the likes of Record, Stanley or Millers Falls be able to cut it against modern smoothing planes? Emphatically yes! If you can afford one of the modern enginerd marvels please go for it! But don't worry too much, modern makers can't keep up with demand at the moment and why not save your money for a router plane, plough or moving filister? As you'll see in the video I didn't need complex tools. All four of the planes were within a tolerance of 1.5 thousandth of an inch (0.04mm) and didn't require the sole to be flattened! The only issue was the cutting iron, but this was quickly made good with a honing guide and some very coarse sandpaper. I'll be doing a follow up video soon discussing the planes is more detail and more importantly, what to look for to avoid too many headaches. I hope you enjoy the video. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Thanks for watching!
