This Teac A-4000S is a special one to me. Built in the late 1960's, it was my introduction to the world of reel to reel decks, and my limited understanding of it when I got it led me to avoid Teac products for a long time, until a few years ago. During the process or replacing capacitors in the transport mechanism, the reverse function stopped working. Troubleshooting led the source of the problem to relay K3, the relay that reverses the capstan motor. Join me as I overview the repair process, give some tips on these older Teac decks, and play some old American Airlines tapes that are about as old as the deck itself 0:00 Intro 0:17 An intro to this A-4000S 1:25 Suzuki Bombs 2:07 Back in the 90's... 2:43 Replaced Suzuki bombs 3:45 Capstan reverse relay location 4:08 Capstan reverse relay 5:00 A-4000 vs A-4000S capstan reverse relay 6:25 The search for a new relay 7:00 Relay details 8:18 Kit bashing* a relay 11:50 Adjusting the assembled relay 14:43 Preparing relay board for reinstall of relay 15:39 soldering in repaired relay 18:26 Reinstalling relay board 20:44 Smoke test 22:47 Things to check on a A-4000S 26:57 Rear panel connections - back in the 90's part 2... 28:00 Reel motors explained 30:30 demagnetizing the tape path 33:33 Swapping a tape from one machine to another 35:45 Direct audio from deck to camera 36:28 Listening to music and random forward/reverse play 39:15 MORE Jimmy Durante 39:55 Speculation on the tapes 40:55 Yay it works again! 41:19 Remote control demonstration 43:37 Music Outro Kit bashing is a model railroading term for taking two (or more) models or model kits and recombining the components to make a custom model.
