I wanna start by saying I am not a doctor nor any other professional in this field. If you feel you have injured yourself, seek a medical professional. I am speaking strictly about my own experience climbing with a partially ruptured A2 pulley and sprained A3. I competed in a bouldering league back in May this year. The last week of the comp, I suddenly had very sharp pain in my left ring finger at the A2 joint. Being the last week of the comp, I taped up (without any clue) and continued, favoring my left hand. Then, while over gripping a very harsh crimp, I heard a pop in my right ring finger followed by pain at the A2-A3 joints. So, my comp ended, but my team and I still placed 3rd! I took a couple weeks off completely and wore a finger splint at work and it was miserable. I stumbled across a technique called “h-taping” and decided to try it. I slowly got back on the wall and eased into very juggy or slopey routes, staying away from any crimps and staying away from bouldering altogether! After the first month and a half or so of strictly soft lead routes, I started increasing difficulty and slowly introducing some bouldering. One key rule I had was, DO NOT PUSH THROUGH PAIN!!! This is normally something I do, but with this injury, I felt it best to really listen to my body and the moment I felt a sharp pain, i called it a night. I also increased my weight training during this time to supplement the lack of climbing. Now, a little over 4 months in, I’m back to bouldering V7 and just sent my first V8 the other night. I still tape up every time I climb though it’s more preventative than anything else. It may be a habit I decide is not worth breaking at this point. It takes me about 5 minutes to H-Tape both fingers and it gives me a sense of confidence that I won’t over strain my fingers again. Some may find the tape uncomfortable at first, but I am so used to it now after the first climb or 2, I completely forget it’s even there. Worth it to me! I hope this helps! I found the lack of information about this to be quite frustrating. Let me know if I should make another video elaborating this subject and how I overcame this injury and continue to.
