How To Record Woodwind - Oboe - Mic Placement - Techniques

In this video Jason de Wilde, the Head of Audio at the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) demonstrates mic placement and techniques for recording an oboe. Although not common in contemporary music, the occasional recording session calls for recording this instrument in solo mode. The video covers the placement of 2 microphones -- one close miking technique and one distant ambient one. Using a variety of microphone polar patterns we can see how the we can wind more of the room ambiance into the overall sound. We then further blend the actual ambient microphone to give the final result. The video also demonstrates the important non-technical aspects of recording. It involves building a rapport between sound engineer and musician, explaining the process, set up of headphone monitoring. This is an important lesson in communication and helping the musician feel relaxed and comfortable before entering the recording environment. These conversations also help the engineer to understand the instrument and the person they are recording. Throughout all stages of the course students are taught theoretical concepts which are supported with practical audio classes.
