This documentary introduces some traditional techniques related to Indian fabric. - Phalam Studio About “Phalam Studio” Phalam Studio is a slow design label that creates in collaboration with Indian artisans. We document the Indian handicraft scene with the aim to provide designer products made with traditional skills & new-age aesthetics. About “Charaka” The Charaka Women’s Multipurpose Industrial Co-operative Society is located in a village called Heggodu / Bheemanakone - at the heart of the Malnad region of the Western Ghats. Charaka was founded in 1994 with the dream of setting up an environmentally-friendly rural industry to generate local employment, as a sustainable alternative to intensive agriculture and large industries. It is a unique system because unlike the traditional weaving community in India, Charaka’s weavers do not have the advantage of caste or family trade based skill transmission. People who want to learn the craft acquire their skills here through training and work. Today, Charaka has set up units in various villages in Karnataka to serve as production bases. It has the distinction of being one of the largest producers of naturally dyed handloom fabric in the country, currently producing over 30000 metres of fabric per month. About “DESI” DESI is Charaka’s sister organisation that handles marketing and sales of their products, and manages multiple retail stores in urban, semi-urban and rural areas across Karnataka.
