Around this time, Liszt was seeking to redefine what the piano could do, translating the kind of brilliance and excitement heard in Paganini’s performances into keyboard music. No. 4 is built around flowing, fast-moving patterns that require smooth control and strong coordination from the pianist. While technically demanding, it also has a bright and elegant sound, making it appealing even to listeners who are not familiar with classical piano technique. The work shows Liszt’s goal of combining showy virtuosity with clear musical character. Liszt later revised the Paganini études to improve playability and musical balance. Today, the piece is in the public domain, as Liszt died in 1886.
