Funk carioca (Rio de Janeiro funk) evolved from street parties where DJs played and appropriated Miami Bass, Freestyle, and Electro records to an Afro-Brazilian electronic dance music strongly tied to the favelas. Musicians of the sample-based music reinterpret authorship and ownership to recognize by name the network of DJs and fans needed for circulation while treating musicians' own "loops" (sound snippets) as an anonymous commons.
