The Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA is reputedly the oldest continually operating inn in the country, opening as Howe's tavern in 1716. Henry Ford began buying property in Sudbury in 1923 by first acquiring the Inn and 60 acres of land for $60,000. He continued buying land in town over the next few years and eventually owned about 3,000 acres with the intention of developing it into a historical village and museum.
