Gadhafi leaving room STORYLINE: Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi ended his first trip outside the Arab world in 15 years on Wednesday by exhorting Europe to get more involved in "the tragedy in Iraq" and criticising Western democracies as phony for going to war there in the first place. European officials meanwhile traded blame for a security breach on Tuesday that allowed a man to approach Gadhafi, pull a letter out of his pocket and try to force it on the North African leader as he shook hands with a European Union official. The man was hustled away by security guards in a crazy scene in the lobby of a EU building as the letter went flying overhead. Gadhafi, once considered one of the world's most dangerous men for sponsoring terrorism, came to Brussels offering lucrative business deals and an olive branch, along with a veiled threat to return to the "days of explosive belts" if provoked by "evil" from the West. After meeting EU officials on Tuesday to talk about cooperation in curbing illegal immigration and joining a regional aid and trade program, Gadhafi spoke on Wednesday with Belgian business leaders and a group of lawmakers at the Belgian Parliament. In a 45-minute discourse on democracy and the Middle East, Gadhafi was long on analyses of the problems but short on specific suggestions. He argued against a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and said "It's important that Europe raises its voice about the tragedy in Iraq," he added later, without any details. He spent more time on the decision by the US-led coalition to invade Iraq despite massive street protests in many countries, which he called evidence of the failings of Western-style democracy. "The American people and the English people were against the aggression in Iraq," he said through an interpreter. "So in that case, the representation was false." Then, uttering his first and only phrase in English, he added: "Representation is falsification." Gadhafi has held absolute power in Libya since a bloodless coup in 1969. On Tuesday, Amnesty International accused his regime of continuing human rights abuses and fostering a "climate of fear" in which most Libyans are afraid to speak out. On Tuesday, the one-time pariah swept into EU headquarters like a movie star in brown Bedouin robes, flanked by female bodyguards in blue camouflage. He gave a clenched fist salute to about 200 supporters outside the building while a smattering of protesters barricaded across the street shouted Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
