Botrytis rot, which is also known as gray mould is one of the major diseases that affects grapes. It is caused by the fungus Botrytis cineria, that can infect grape berries, leaves, stems and flowers. The disease is favoured by high humidity and temperatures between 20-25°C. In the vineyards, the fungus attacks the shoots & flower stalks leading to premature fruit drop. In the early stages of infection, the infected berries become soft, watery & loose. When rubbed, the skin slips from the berries leaving the firm pulp exposed. At later stages, the infected berries shrivel, rot and turn dark brown showing the presence of greyish growth of the fungus. The infected berries can also develop a sour, unpleasant taste. Management practices include, 1. Regularly removing and disposing of infected plant material can reduce the disease spread. 2. Prophylactic use of fungicides at required time intervals can help in managing the disease. Preventing Botrytis rot in the first place is the best way to manage the disease. Good vineyard management practices, including regular monitoring for disease and appropriate use of fungicides, can help prevent Botrytis rot from becoming a major problem.
