On September 15, 1952, 22-year-old Betty Shanks was walking home from the tram station after attending a night lecture in Brisbane. After disembarking at around 9:30 PM at the tram station in Grange, her walk home was just 400 meters. She never made it. Instead, her body was found in the garden of a house horribly beaten. She still had on her gold watch and jewelry, and her handbag was there (though her wallet wasn't). She wasn't raped (although her underwear was removed and her bra straps broken. She had a broken jaw, a lacerated cheek, a tooth knocked out, and bruising and marks on her face and legs from being brutally kicked. Many theories have been offered as to who could have attacked Betty and what was the motive. Seven men confessed to the murder, but none were found believable. Two books have been written on the case; one offering a soldier as the offender and the other book outlining the claim of a woman who says her father surely murdered Betty. Some believe it was a case of mistaken identity. I will go through the evidence and determine the most likely answer to who and why.... although, clearly, whoever did it got away with it.
