BOSNIA/CROATIA: PONTOON BRIDGE ACROSS RIVER SAVA FINALLY OPEN

(31 Dec 1995) English/Nat The U-S military's gateway to Bosnia is finally open. The bridge across the Sava River, which forms the border between Croatia and Bosnia, has been completed by U-S military engineers Sunday after being delayed by bad weather. The first U-S tanks have now begun crossing from Zupanja in Croatia over to Bosnia. U-S troops waded through mud as they raised the sign to show that they had finally completed their task. The building of the pontoon bridge across the Sava River was essential for the deployment of 20-thousand U-S troops into Bosnia. And finally it was ready for military traffic. UPSOUND:(English) "I don't think it'll be any problem, we've done it before. They're safe, the bridge is fine." The first vehicle to move across was a 58-ton tank recovery vehicle used to test the span. Then the rest of the U-S First Armored Division began to creep across the bridge at maximum permitted speed of 8 kph (5 mph). The bulk of the U-S I-FOR forces are expected to cross the bridge in 35 to 40 days. But it has taken a lot of hard work to reach this stage. The bridge-building had been delayed by flooding. Snow, rain and sub-zero temperatures made the task even more difficult. With the main route into Bosnia now open, American military convoys are now heading into Bosnia. The U-S troops make up a third of the 60-thousand-strong NATO force arriving to police the accord to end 3 1/2 years of war in the former Yugoslavia. American Abrams tanks then rumbled into Moslem-held territory in Bosnia for the first time. The U-S troops are replacing a Swedish contingent which has been based in the area. After crossing the Sava river the American tanks took up positions around the Moslem-held town of Srebrenik, as part of a 20-thousand strong force that will deploy around the Tuzla area. The soldiers will make their base here and provide help and assistance to the surrounding area as and when they are needed. SOUNDBITE: To set up an operation here south of the Posavina corridor so we can operate and run daily missions out and about. We can base out of here to conduct our daily missions whatever they may be: reconnaissance patrols, resupply operations, check point operations. This allows us stability and an area where we can provide those kinds of missions. SUPER CAPTION: Lieut Anthony Malloy, US Army The troops are managing to keep a smile on their face despite the wintry conditions. SOUNDBITE: A pretty place to spend New Year's Eve? Yes that's right New Years Eve. It's probably where we going to spend New Year's Eve in this field. (Laughs.) SUPER CAPTION: Lieut Anthony Malloy, US Army As the men of this armoured unit bed down for the last night of 1995, a few must be wondering what the New Year has in store for them.
