Why are men leaving the church—and what does worship have to do with it? For decades, churches have watched men quietly disengage from congregational life. Not because faith demands too much—but because, in many cases, worship demands too little. In this episode of Everyday Reformation, we tackle a hard but necessary question: What kind of men does our worship form? From concert-style evangelical services to emotionally driven, consumer-oriented music, much of modern worship trains men to be spectators rather than participants. But worship is never neutral. What the church sings shapes what men love, what they fear, and what they’re willing to sacrifice for. Joined by Pastor Brandon Scroggins and music leader Matt, we explore how recovering psalm-singing, robust hymns, and historically grounded worship is forming strong, dependable men—and reshaping the culture of the local church. This conversation moves from diagnosis to prescription, contrasting: Concert Christianity vs. congregational worship Effeminate sentimentality vs. ordered strength King Alfred’s War Song and Psalm 23—warfare and shepherding held together This episode isn’t about musical preference. It’s about formation, faithfulness, and passing down a treasury of truth to the next generation. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 – Why men are leaving the evangelical church 00:48 – Worship is not neutral: formation through song 01:00 – When church feels like a concert, not worship 02:23 – Emotion vs. obedience in biblical worship 03:06 – Everyday Reformation intro 03:30 – Introducing Brandon Scroggins 04:11 – Introducing Matt & the shift toward psalm-singing 05:04 – Why RBC began singing the Psalms 07:04 – God’s providence & Mary Huffman’s role 08:21 – Psalm sings and congregational buy-in 10:23 – Why preaching and singing Psalms belong together 12:37 – Resetting worship after seeker-sensitive evangelicalism 14:18 – Worship as formation, not atmosphere 15:29 – How music shapes our view of God 17:27 – What kind of men different worship cultures produce 19:18 – Why churches can’t be built like concerts 21:58 – King Alfred’s War Song: singing for courage 23:20 – Why the church forgot its own songs 25:21 – Psalm 23: shepherding without softness 27:30 – Strength and tenderness rightly ordered 33:49 – Worship that forms men over time 35:00 – Matt’s vision for men singing parts 36:19 – Brandon on generational legacy and worship
