The Australasian Birth Trauma Association's THINKNATAL Launch - Perineal Care in Birth

The THINKNATAL series is a collaboration between consumers and a range of clinicians involved in maternity care, such as midwives, obstetricians, pelvic health physiotherapists and mental health clinicians, the first video in the series focuses on Perineal Tears. This video is from the virtual launch and includes introductory remarks from the President of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG), Dr Vijay Roach, and the President of The Australian College of Midwives (ACM), Terri Barrett. Perineal Tears - Why this is our first in the series. Approximately 4 out of every 100 women having a vaginal birth experience a third or fourth degree tear. Yet, too many women are left asking ‘Why didn’t anyone tell me this could happen’? There can be social stigma attached to suffering injury at the time of birth. Pregnant women hear that labour and birth are “normal” and “natural” life events, and that “a woman’s body is made to birth”. They are suddenly impacted in ways they had never imagined, in all different aspects of their lives. What has been said about the video series “Giving women unbiased and factual information enables woman-centred care” – RANZCOG President Dr Vijay Roach “What an incredible resource that pregnant women now have available to them. Health organisations need to get on board and show the video as part of core antenatal education. I suffered a third degree tear and wish I had seen this video prior to my birth. Having this knowledge would have prompted a conversation with my health professionals to create a plan to better protect my perineum.”- Ellie, Geelong, VIC “Two years ago, I experienced a severe tear after a forceps delivery. I wish ABTA’s Stop the Tear video could have formed part of my antenatal education, which did not mention serious tears let alone the ongoing physical and emotional impacts. ABTA’s resources for women and their families, which are developed by and with women who have lived experience of birth trauma, should form part of every expectant mother’s birth preparation.” – Nicole, Woollongabba, QLD
