Neptune did something to its largest moon that no other planet has done. It kidnapped Triton from the Kuiper Belt, melted it from the inside out through billions of years of tidal forces, and locked it on a path that ends in total destruction. Triton orbits backward. Its surface is covered in terrain found nowhere else in the solar system. Voyager 2 caught active geysers erupting at minus 235 degrees Celsius. And in roughly 3.5 billion years, Neptune will rip Triton apart and wear its remains as rings. We've only seen 40 percent of Triton's surface. One flyby. Five and a half hours. No mission is scheduled to go back. This is the story of what Neptune did to its own moon, and why Triton's refusal to die quietly might be the most unsettling part.
