Mother to child transmission of sexually transmitted diseases can happen and the most common one which are affecting the newborns are Herpes and HIV. Others are Chlamydia and streptococcal infections. Basically if Herpes has come for the first time and are active with sores and blisters around the vagina then a vaginal delivery is not allowed because transmission to the baby and causing neonatal herpes and other problems for the baby and infection are very high. The sepsis levels are very high. So that is avoided. In case of HIV patients there are anti retroviral treatments available which are started from 24 weeks, 28 weeks, 32 weeks or if the patient comes in labour. So these retroviral treatments are must to deliver. Usually it can be increased mother to child transmission can happen with a vaginal delivery. So usually a C-section is preferred in an HIV infected patient unless the patient comes in active and going to labour we deliver the patient. Even breast feeding in an HIV patient may be avoided because even transmission of HIV through breastfeeding is also there. There are other diseases which are streptococcal infections and Chlamydia and all. If they are very bad appropriately antibiotic care to the mother and the newborn has to be appropriately given to prevent transmission.
