The COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the informal sector in Harare, Zimbabwe, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. As the largest employer in the country, the informal sector accounts for more than 90% of all jobs, providing a lifeline for countless individuals residing in informal settlements and struggling with poverty. This short film features Mr Shuviro, a dedicated member of the Zimbabwe Homeless People's Federation (ZHPF), hailing from Mabvuku/Tafara. With his exceptional carpentry skills, Shuviro possesses the talent needed to thrive in his craft. However, the unfortunate reality of the COVID-19 disruptions left him without a proper working space. The pandemic's regulations forced the closure of home industries where he used to operate, leaving him in a state of uncertainty. The government's implementation of lockdown measures, aimed at curbing the spread of the virus, dealt a significant blow to Shuviro's informal business. For him and countless others operating in the informal sector, the impact has been profound. Some businesses were forced to shut down entirely, while others struggled to operate at a limited capacity. As a result, both Shuviro and many individuals residing in informal settlements have experienced a sharp decline in income, exacerbating the existing challenges of poverty they face. In the face of these adversities, it is crucial that we recognise the resilience and determination of individuals like Mr Shuviro. Their unwavering spirit and the invaluable contributions they make to their communities serve as a reminder of the indomitable human spirit. As we navigate these challenging times together, let us strive to support and uplift those affected by the pandemic's impact on the informal sector in Harare, Zimbabwe. Together, we can forge a brighter future for all. This video is part of work by the International Institute for Environment and Development, the Indian Institute for Human Settlements and Dialogue on Shelter Trust to highlight what lessons can be learned from how relief efforts delivered social protection to informal workers and informal settlements in India and Zimbabwe during the COVID-19 pandemic. Funded by the Covid Collective (FCDO), an archive has been created to showcase articles, publications, videos and more highlighting lessons from Delhi and Jaipur in India, and Harare in Zimbabwe.
