Repertoire: Soukaku Reibo, Traditional Six Japanese Gardens by Kaija Saariaho Wiegala by Ilse Weber Und der Regen rinnt by Ilse Weber Wiegenlied by Ilse Weber (Cycles) what falls must rise by Kojiro Umezaki Ensemble: Kojiro Umezaki, shakuhachi Mitchell Carlstrom, percussion San Diego Children’s Choir - Premier Choir Hausmann Quartet Isaac Allen, violin Bram Goldstein, violin Angela Choong, viola Alex Greenbaum, cello About Kojiro Umezaki: Noted by The New York Times as a "virtuosic, deeply expressive shakuhachi player and composer" and the LA Times as one of the "better kept secrets of Southern California music," Kojiro Umezaki (梅崎康二郎) has performed regularly with the Silkroad Ensemble since 2001. He appears on the Grammy Award winning album Sing Me Home, A Playlist Without Borders, Off the Map, and the Grammy-nominated 2015 documentary film, The Music of Strangers, directed by Morgan Neville. In a Circle Records released (Cycles), an album of original work, in 2014, and 流芳 Flow, a duo album with Wu Man, in 2021. Other notable recordings as performer, composer, and/or producer include Brooklyn Rider's Dominant Curve, Nicole Mitchell's Mandorla Awakening II, Kei Akagi's Aqua Puzzle, and Huun Huur Tu's Ancestors Call. Born to a Japanese father and Danish mother, Umezaki grew up in Tokyo, and continues to explore global and hybrid practices in music. About Mitchell Carlstrom: Mitchell Carlstrom is a percussionist dedicated to creating thought-provoking musical experiences. Through interpretation of compositions, he strives to challenge the meaning of sound in space, creating unique soundscapes for audiences to enjoy. Carlstrom’s performance experience ranges from solo repertoire to large ensembles, with his best musicianship found while working in chamber groups creating intimate music with friends. As a member of red fish blue fish, a founding member of the MinusOne Percussion Quartet, and a former member of Left Edge Percussion, he has toured throughout the United States and Mexico. Currently Mitchell is a DMA student at UCSD studying under Steven Schick, while having earned a Masters in Percussion Performance from Southern Oregon University under the direction of Terry Longshore, and a Bachelor of Music in Theory/Composition from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. About San Diego Children’s Choir - Premier Choir: Premier Choir is San Diego Children's Choir's most advanced treble ensemble, for ages 11-18. San Diego Children's Choir is the area's oldest and largest choral training program for youth ages 1-18. Now in its 34th year of programming, over 1,900 students in San Diego county will receive regular music education training through the choir in three branches of programming, the biggest of which is the outreach program providing free, in school music education to Elementary students in underserved San Diego Communities. About Hausmann Quartet: The Hausmann Quartet has established itself as an integral part of the cultural life of Southern California since its arrival in San Diego in 2010. As faculty Artists-in-Residence at San Diego State University they teach and organize the chamber music program, engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments and visit local schools for concerts and clinics on behalf of the School of Music and Dance. Their latest endeavor is Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series on a historic ferry boat exploring the string quartet repertoire through Haydn’s quartet cycle. They have pioneered interactive programs for students, adult amateur musicians and homeless and perform throughout North America and Asia. About Maps & Memories: Maps & Memories was inspired by Mingei International Museum’s Washi Transformed exhibit featuring highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations that explore the astonishing potential of Japanese handmade paper, known as washi. About Art of Elan: Known for its collaborative spirit, Art of Elan has been pioneering unique events and bringing exciting classical music to diverse audiences for over 16 years through innovative partnerships and bi-national initiatives that have cultivated curious audiences on both sides of the border.
