The goal is to provide real world observations for those that may be contemplating buying an RV standard or in-motion dish or upgrading from their current Standard RV dish. In our Performance observations we will cover the installation, terrain type, and speed test configuration that we used to create a reasonable level of consistency between the two dishes. Then we’ll cover the results from two areas we have found most relevant to performance that effecting our internet connection experience, on our boat. The first is the familiar upload and download speeds that most of us associate with performance and the second is visibility which impacts the number of drop outs that can be disruptive for highly sensitive application internet video conferencing applications and to a much lower degree, video streaming. If you’re interested in learning more about the differences between the hardware used for both dishes or which might make the most sense for different boaters, we’ll provide a link above to a previous video you may find helpful for that. Installation We have both of these mounted 5 ‘ apart on our boat’s hard top with 8 degrees of inclination to the West. Both are using the standard Starlink Wi-Fi routers for consistency placed 10’ apart. Terrain We are in Roche Harbor, Washington state Our slip has a treeline that obstructs the horizon by: 8 degrees to the North about 295 yards away, 19 degrees to the East about 145 yards away, 13 degrees to the South, and 165 yards away 2 degrees to the West about a mile away We have our mast at 22 degrees due East 8’ from the dishes and 15 masts from other boats ranging from 12 to 36 degrees from 13 to 100 yards surrounding us predominately to the North and South. speed test configuration We are using Speedtest from Ookla and selected San Juan Cable as the Test servers for consistency in our results. Test Results Visibility First we’ll look at the qualitative results for Visibility between the two Dishys. After 12 hours of letting both dishys collect data on Obstructions, The RV Standard 11”x20” dishy with its 100 degree visibility of the sky line showed three obstructions and a decent overall visibility to the skyline. As you might expect, the 20”x 22” RV High Performance In-Motion, showed and even wider 140 degree visibility to the skyline, that is twice the size of the standard RV dish. This resulted in no observable obstructions. This resulted in quantitative results of over double the drop outs exceeding 2 seconds, when comparing the RV Standard dish to the RV High Performance in motion dish. While 7 drop outs on the standard RV dish isn’t terrible, These would noticeably disrupt a video conference call, especially those in the 15-19s range. We look forward to getting the High Performance Dishy out to some tight anchorages that created drop outs on our Standard RV Dishy every 10 to 15 minutes in Desolation Sound, BC. If it is able to reduce dropouts by 70%, like the results we found here… Speed Tests! So do these greater visibility results and difference is hardware give better performance? The RV Standard dishy delivered performance on par with average unthrottled results at download of 64Mbps and upload of 4Mbps.
