A very popular Moluccan group in the 1970s, which elaborates on the successful Latin sound of Carlos Santana and provides it with a tasty oriental touch. This is their most recent album, a double live CD recorded in 2018. With this, they prove to be one of the best Dutch live bands. When the American Eagles started to score hits in the Netherlands, the group name was changed to Massada in 1973. On February 26, 1975, a day before percussionist Nippy Noya's 29th birthday, Massada won a group competition from Muziekkrant OOR; a record deal was rejected because artistic freedom could not be guaranteed. In 1978 the long-awaited debut album Astaganaga was released with the hit singles Dansa and Latin Dance. The use of Latin American rhythms and percussion instruments yielded comparisons to Santana. The follow-up was released in May 1979 (Massada deliberately released one album a year); Pukul Tifa sounded more "Moluccan" than the debut album and spawned the singles Unknown Destination and the instrumental Arumbai. That same month, Massada played at Pinkpop, followed by a tour through Germany, among other things. In 1980 the third album was released; Pusaka contained the singles Feelin' Lonely and Sajang é. The latter single stood out because of the women's and children's choir and reached the number 1 position on the charts in the Netherlands. This was Massada's first and only number 1 hit to date. It was never played live at the time because it did not fit into the regular repertoire, and a request to record a Malaysian album was turned down. That same year, Massada Live appeared, including the audience favourite Sageru (from Astaganaga), which was released as a single. Because the line-up had changed, Massada decided in 1981 to go in a new direction. Baru (New Life; hence the belly of a pregnant woman was depicted on the cover) had a more funky Latin character and for the first time did not contain songs in Malay. This change of style was not appreciated by many fans (and also a number of band members). The record company released Tomorrow Has Its Own Sorrow (sung by Lisa Boray) as a single; the band disagreed, mainly because a Massada with both a different style and a different singing voice would alienate even more fans. The line-up changed a few more times and the success slowly declined. Plans to tour Indonesia in 1983 had to be cancelled. That year, instead of working on a new album, Massada worked on the soundtracks for the television movie Joost and the Briefgeheim series. After finding a new record company, a cover version of the Loggins & Messina hit Vahevala was released in early 1986; it was not a hit and the band was not allowed to record a new LP. By this time, the band members were more involved in projects other than Massada. For example, the percussionist/singer Martino Latupeirissa, who left in 1988, released a solo single (Love Wave) and subsequently played with Candy Dulfer and The Pilgrims, among others. Plans for a comeback single in 1990 were cancelled at the last minute, making Massada a thing of the past. The Return Following a performance at his wedding, Johnny Manuhutu joined the Massada Revival Band in 1995. This went so well that he founded a new Masada with a number of members. In 1996 the return to the Pasar Malam Besar in The Hague started and following this success more performances followed. In 2001, Massada played at a benefit concert for the Moluccas. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary) the group filmed a live DVD in Huizen on June 27, 2004; several ex-members were invited, including super guitarist Rudy de Queljoe and Nippy Noya. Both then became part of the permanent line-up again. In March 2006, Massada finally gave four concerts on Indonesian soil, one of which was at the Java Jazz Festival (similar to North Sea Jazz). The band returned in 2009, 2016 and 2017 (2x). On June 17, 2011, Massada gave a concert in the Paradiso in which the album Astaganaga was performed in its entirety. On March 29, 2014, Massada celebrated its 40th anniversary with a concert in Winterswijk.[3] In September 2016, Massada gave a farewell concert for Nippy Noya who had been involved with the band for 40 years; he continued to make himself available for matinee concerts and cooperated on the recording of a double live CD/DVD on November 24, 2017. Named after a new song, Baronda was released in March 2018 and was promoted with an extensive tour. This was followed by a compilation album in the Golden Years of Dutch Pop series, released by Universal Records.
