In this fourteenth installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thought, and importance of Thomas Aquinas in his historical context. Thomas was from a minor noble family, studied with the Benedictines, and then joined the relatively new Dominican Order, in which he rose to become a teacher of major significance. In the lecture, I discuss the importance and nature of the new Mendicant orders. Other talks in this series focused upon Plato, Aristotle, Boethius, Anselm of Canterbury, Rene Descartes, Thomas Hobbes, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Hannah Arendt.
