Beat Furrer (*1954) Tableaux I–IV, for orchestra (2021) SWR Symphonieorchester Brad Lubman, conductor World Première, 14 October 2021, Donaueschinger Musiktage '21 Commentary by Marie Luise Maintz As in a series of pictures, Beat Furrer explores in his three orchestral studies specific musical textures between quasi-mechanical – expanding and singular – "speaking” events. His Tableaux are dealing with depth effects, with the interplay of large-scale developments, stratifications, and the finest, natural and unregulated expansion of voices. They are inspired by the early paintings of Max Ernst, circa 1927, one of them titled Forest and Sun, in which monolithic arrangements of trees can be seen piling up vertically and – if you look closely – branching out into delicate structures and populated by living creatures. To the score come "independent voices”, that is, not in tempo with the developments notated in the score: noisy lines. They appear like whispering or speaking in the background, spreading a shrill, icy colorfulness, with a sound that appears in all instruments in the highest registers. The first movement is an image of coldness, of the death of living things, the second associates fire with a constantly moving upward dynamic, which again relates to the noisy and finally comes to a standstill, a "cosmic noise”. "The structures result from certain movements or are created from physical pressure ( frottage/grattage) and are brought to life in various layers in the background. In Max Ernst's forest paintings there are dead vertical structures and a kind of glistening sun, a kind of nature morte, full of life or living beings. In all 3 pieces there are constant transformations of the sound, a movement that constantly happens from bottom to top in different harmonic constellations. In the background another level appears: voices calling, shouting, whispering, talking or singing. Behind the regular structure there are unstable irregular phenomena." The third movement is characterized by a chorale-like texture, chordally dense sounds, each distorted in different ways, up to the point of shouting. Harmonically, this moves in minute modulating steps and is interpolated kaleidoscopically (structurally/melodically). The end fades away in a vocal colored murmuring noise and single isolated events, remnants of a continuous movement. Donaueschinger Musiktage '21 #domt21 https://www.swr.de/swrclassic/donaues...
