Ignacio Farías (SFB 1265) – Design in Re (Minor): On the Processuality of Re-Figuration Design does not merely name a mode of intervening in an ongoing process of re-figuration. The re-figuration of society is fundamentally shaped by design – or, more precisely, by “redesign”, as Latour would have it: a situated, reflexive practice of problematising and tweaking existing socio-material, and hence spatial, arrangements. This talk invites us to take the prefix “re-” as a serious qualifier of processuality – an under-theorised aspect of re-figuration theory. Whereas the predominant focus on the conflict-laden interweaving of spatial logics describes something closer to “inter-figuration,” re-figuration calls for attention to re-figuration as a recursive process. Design in Re (minor) means attending to situated, iterative and recursive operations – repair, retrofit, reconstruction – whose designerly tweaks cumulatively re-figure space without the grandiosity of “major” designs.
