(1 Aug 1995) English/Nat U-S Attorney General Janet Reno has been defending her role in the disastrous end to the Waco cult siege. She told a Congressional hearing on Tuesday that she did everything she could to end the 1993 stand-off peacefully. Attorney General Janet Reno sworn in before the Congressional committee looking into the Waco, Texas, siege. Reno came in for criticism during her testimony but remained calm and deliberate throughout. SOUNDBITE: Clearly, a dangerous situation was becoming more dangerous, especially for the children. We had received allegations that Koresh had sexually abused the children in the past including Kiri Jewell when she was 10 years old. We had also received allegations that Koresh had physically abused the children. For example, a former Davidian alleged that Koresh had once spanked a young child for 40 minutes so hard that her bottom was bleeding. The child was only eight months old. SUPER CAPTION: Attorney General Janet Reno A fire at the Branch Davidian compound after the tanks injected tear gas left 81 cult members dead, including 22 children. Around 20 of the Davidians were found dead of gun shots. SOUNDBITE: Everyone involved in the events of April 19 made their best judgements based on all the information we had. SUPER CAPTION: Reno gave the reasons why she abandoned negotiations with the sect leader in favour of a tear-gas assault. Among them - reports that at least one private militia group was on the way to help Koresh or attack him. SOUNDBITE: This was the hardest decision I have ever had to make, probably one of the hardest decisions that anybody could have to make. It will live with me for the rest of my life. I'm accountable for it and I'm happy to answer your questions. SUPER CAPTION: Attorney General Janet Reno Reno defended the decision to send in the tanks which injected the tear gas. SOUNDBITE: These tanks were used to protect FBI agents who were on the front line who were exposed to men who had killed four FBI agents, ATF agents, who had wounded 15, who we knew were armed with very high-powered weapons. I don't think you would want them to be unprotected Mr. Chairman. SUPER CAPTION: Attorney General Janet Reno Asked about President Clinton's involvement in the decision-making process Reno said he agreed to back her up but left the law enforcement decisions up to her. SOUNDBITE: But we advised him based on a law enforcement judgement, not a political judgement, not a judgement of the White House. But a decision was made in the law enforcement arena where it should be. SUPER CAPTION: Attorney General Janet Reno Reno said that David Koresh, the cult leader, was solely responsible for the deaths of his followers and any conclusion to the contrary was an insult to the truth.
