** I DO NOT OWN THE COPYRIGHTS TO THESE SONGS FOR PROMO PURPOSES ONLY ** January 31, 2026 marked the end of an era. Since the mid 1980s the Jamaica Colosseum Mall was a mecca of talent, entrepreneurial spirit and culture for Queens, New York natives and Hip-Hop. The Colosseum housed sneaker and clothing stores, jewelry, bookings, a food court and was home to The Shirt Kings, who made childhood cartoon characters into ghetto street icons donning gold rope chains, Gucci jogging suits and had all the swag to match. @wutangclan shot the video for Ice Cream there. If you were fly in the 80s, 90s and even 2000s you came through the Colosseum doors at some points. Run DMC talked about their Adidas stepping through Colosseum doors. The Colosseum was the hub with the Queens bus terminal right across the street. Several nearby high schools would gather on 165th Street once school let out. Some times it was terrifying for business owners and bystanders alike. The energy could be overwhelming especially on Halloween when jewelry stores would be prone to smash and grabs. There was a danger and mystic about the Colosseum block, you could cop your first pair of Jordans or Timberlands with your friends before a party or before the school year started. On that same block 2 weeks later you could get robbed for those same kicks it see a young girl bleeding because her door knocker earrings had just been ripped from her ears. You went to the Colosseum block to shop, to be with your crew, to be noticed, to show off your new whip and to just take it all in. Before there was social media you had to be in the mix to know what was really going on and it was all going down in or around the Colosseum. Peace and Love to the Queens community who supported the hundreds of businesses that were under that roof at some point and time. An old Macy's department store, decked out with gold escalators was an essential part of urban Queens culture from the 1980s til it closed it's doors. It's popularity may have waned in recent years and we'll never turn back the hands of time but the Jamaica Colosseum Mall was and always will be an essential part of Queens culture and played a major part in Hip-Hop fashion as it stands today. Peace to the Collie Block. 165.
